Steve Punt turns private investigator, examining littleSAT

Steve examines persistent rumours that Hitler wasSAT
intending to set up his command headquarters in the mostSAT
unlikely of places - the south London suburb of Balham.SAT
For years, the corridors of the large residential block DuSAT
Cane Court have echoed to whispered claims of dubiousSAT
links. At first glance, it all seems to stack up - notSAT
only was the building spared bombing by the Luftwaffe, butSAT
many say it was a hotbed of German spies who were busilySAT
laying the groundwork for Hitler's triumphant arrival. ButSAT
the picture soon becomes confused as Steve discovers thatSAT
Balham is not alone in claiming a Nazi pedigree.SAT
Steve speaks to Balham locals, including Radio 4 favouriteSAT

Evan Davis and guests consider whether we have entered aSAT
new era of austerity. Are we growing vegetables in ourSAT
gardens at home, instead of dining out at expensiveSAT
restaurants? Are we turning up our noses at gas-guzzlingSAT
cars, not just because we can't afford them, but becauseSAT
they offend our new sensibilities of prudence and caution?SAT
Evan talks to Dr Shumeet Banerji, chief executive ofSAT
management consultants Booz and Co, Rita Clifton, chairmanSAT
of Interbrand London, and hedge fund manager Hugh Hendry,SAT
founder of Eclectica Asset Management, about whether theySAT
believe we are in for a long, hard slog or if they can seeSAT
light at the end of the economic tunnel.SAT
They also discuss the subject of consultants; with two ofSAT
them on the panel, Evan quizzes them about why they haveSAT
such a bad name. Is there really any justification forSAT
highly-paid senior executives to pay someone else to helpSAT
them make their decisions?SAT

Michael Buerk is joined by Claire Fox, Melanie Phillips,SAT
Clifford Longley and Kenan Malik to consider what hasSAT
become of moral authority.SAT
It doesn't just apply to MPs; the moral authority of theSAT
institutions and professions that we used to turn to as aSAT
source of wisdom and guidance has been undermined, or evenSAT
fatally flawed. And now it seems we cannot even trust ourSAT
poets to be true prophetic voices. So where do we look toSAT
for moral authority now, and does it even matter? Did anySAT
of these bodies ever truly deserve our trust? Is it betterSAT
to rely on our own moral judgement, rather than abdicatingSAT
it to something or someone else?SAT

Tristram Hunt tells the story of architectural change inSUN
Britain over 60 years, tracing the country's changing ideaSUN
of itself through three controversial public buildingSUN
projects.SUN
Tristram tracks the creation of the skyline of CanarySUN
Wharf, from the old docks of the Isle of Dogs to the newSUN
tall towers of Canada Square, with insight fromSUN
architects, planners and politicians.SUN
The Isle of Dogs was the subject of thwarted regenerationSUN
attempts over the years, until in 1979 Michael HeseltineSUN
was put in charge of inner city regeneration in Thatcher'sSUN
new administration. The government created the LondonSUN
Docklands Development Corporation, introduced 'enterpriseSUN
zones', relaxed planning legislation and axed businessSUN
rates for 10 years in an attempt to get investors to buildSUN
on this near-derelict land.SUN
But British architects had to stand back and watch asSUN
American architectural firms won key contracts for theSUN
buildings - that is, until their grand masterplansSUN
collapsed in the 1990s when major developers went bankrupt.SUN
Today, the skyline of Canary Wharf is one of London'sSUN
landmarks. Tristram asks what its story tells us aboutSUN
Britain's recent architectural history.SUN

Episode 1MON
The BBC's Home Affairs Correspondent Danny Shaw tells theMON
inside story of Sir Ian Blair's tenure as Commissioner ofMON
the Metropolitan Police.MON
This liberal, Oxford-educated, 'Blairite' was once seen asMON
the ideal candidate to modernise British policing, and inMON
particular to eliminate the taint of 'institutionalMON
racism' from the Met. But his tenure became increasinglyMON
controversial and he was forced to step aside: dogged byMON
the police shooting of Jean Charles de Menezes, accused ofMON
racial discrimination by one of his most senior officersMON
and facing allegations of cronyism.MON
Danny Shaw talks to those who have known Sir IanMON
throughout his career and examines how Britain'sMON

Blair a victim of politicisation or could he simply not doMON

11:30 The Body of Art b00kt8r3 (Listen)TUE
Bob Dickinson talks to performance artists who have usedTUE
their own bodies as a site for art, and in doing soTUE
challenged the limits of what it means to be human.TUE
In 2008 the Australian artist, Stelarc, began a newTUE
project in which he grew a genetically-cloned ear on hisTUE
left arm. This cloned organ will, after continuingTUE
surgery, be fitted with a microphone and linked to theTUE
internet, so that we will all be able to listen, from ourTUE
PCs, to what Stelarc is hearing through his 'extra ear'.TUE
At the same time, the French artist, Orlan, produced anTUE
installation, Harlequin Coat, which uses recombinant DNATUE
technology to fuse living cells taken from her body withTUE
the cells of other humans, and animals.TUE
Bob Dickinson talks to these artists and others, includingTUE
Marina Abramovic, Franko B and the Chinese artist He YunTUE
Chang, and asks them what makes them want to endureTUE
discomfort, pain and isolation. He reports on the way inTUE
which certain artists are now moving away from the limitedTUE
space of their bodies, fascinated by the way technologyTUE
and genetic engineering are remapping our understanding ofTUE

Julian O'Halloran investigates claims thatTUE
industrial-scale pig farms in America played a key role inTUE
exposing us to the swine flu virus.TUE
Local people near the first known case in MexicoTUE
questioned the role of an American-owned industrial scaleTUE
pig farm not far away. Any link was strenuously denied,TUE
however, and the US pork industry soon helped persuadeTUE
medical authorities to drop the term 'swine flu'.TUE
But for years American virologists have been studying theTUE
links between new and potentially risky flu viruses andTUE
farm animals. Whatever the role of pig farms in Mexico,TUE
experts say that parts of the current flu virus can beTUE
traced back to outbreaks of swine flu, then affecting onlyTUE
pigs, in several American states in 1998.TUE
As Julian reports from the USA, the move to highlyTUE
intensive pig farming methods by some companies has longTUE
been denounced by green groups and the animal welfareTUE
lobby, who allege massive damage to the environment,TUE
intolerable smells, and health risks to farm workers andTUE
their families. Now they are asking if factory farmingTUE
conditions could have increased the dangers of a globalTUE
flu pandemic.TUE

Olivia O'Leary tells the story of the biggest economicWED
crisis Ireland has ever known and its search for aWED
post-crash identity.WED
For the last 20 years the Irish economy was the pride ofWED
Europe. If the rush to riches was very un-Irish, OliviaWED
tries to find out if her country is now reverting to aWED
more familiar state of penance. William Butler YeatsWED
described the indigenous character trait as an abidingWED
sense of tragedy that sustained people through temporaryWED
periods of joy.WED
For many younger people, who were told that they had moreWED
money and more freedom than any previous generation, theWED
maudlin emigration songs with their tales of yearning andWED
aching loneliness felt like stories from a distant era.WED
Suddenly, though, they no longer feel so remote. As theWED
shutters are pulled down on job opportunities at home, theWED
harsh prospect of having to find work abroad is all tooWED
real for thousands of young people.WED
Olivia finds that Ireland's economic crisis is far fromWED
over and finds out how the country is re-imagining itselfWED
anew.WED

Midge Ure travels to Cape Town in South Africa to visitWED
Zip Zap School of Circus Arts for Social Change. Midge isWED
expecting the big top, bright lights and clowns in comedyWED
big shoes and red noses, but this is something entirelyWED
different.WED
Founded in 1992 by Laurence and Brent van Rensburg, theWED
vision for the Zip Zap circus school was to teach circusWED
skills to South African children from all walks of life -WED
from Cape Town's wealthy middle class elite to childrenWED
born in the townships. Boys, girls, wealthy, homeless,WED
extroverted, introverted, aged eight to 18, all have theirWED
places and responsibilities at Zip Zap, which attempts toWED
embody Mandela's vision of the Rainbow Nation.WED
Midge meets Zip Zap's founders in Cape Town, and joinsWED
Shannon and Neville, two trainers from Zip Zap who travelWED
to Khayelitsha township once a week to run the circusWED
outreach programme there for kids born with HIV.WED
Shannon and Neville seem to embody what Zip Zap is allWED
about. The former is a white American from Minneapolis whoWED
went over to train with Zip Zap and the latter is a blackWED
South African from Khayelitsha township - they gotWED
together at Zip Zap.WED
At the Khayelitsha outreach programme, there is no big topWED
or paying audiences, just 25 children aged between eightWED
and 13 who were all born with HIV. They practise circusWED
skills in the street, including juggling, unicycle andWED
throwing hoops. Midge is initially a little scepticalWED
about how teaching circus skills to kids born with HIV canWED
improve their lives. He hears how they have beenWED
ostracised by their own communities and how the circusWED
workshops attempt to enable these children to developWED
their physical strength and abilities, while gainingWED
self-confidence.WED
Midge says, 'I get it now. It's not about building upWED
wonderful performers, it's about integration, it's aboutWED
self-esteem. The circus works - it gives all these kids aWED
focus, it gives them something to do, something to learn.WED
But most importantly it gives them a little bit of hope.'.WED

species - there are over 260 species of solitary bees andWED
bumblebees in the British Isles, all of which perform aWED

Musician and writer CP Lee celebrates the life, career andTHU
music of singer and Oscar-winning actor Burl Ives, in theTHU
centenary year of his birth.THU
CP Lee also explores Ives' co-operation in the 1950s withTHU
the anti-communist trials held by the House Un-AmericanTHU
Activities Committee, and how he informed against hisTHU
fellow folk musicians, notably Pete Seeger, in order toTHU
preserve his film career.THU
Burl Ives came from Illinois, where he sang folk songs asTHU
a child, droping out of school in the late 1920s to becomeTHU
an itinerent banjo player during the economic depression.THU
By the 1930s he was appearing on radio, singing the songsTHU
he made famous, such as Foggy Foggy Dew, The Bluetail FlyTHU
and the hobo ballad Big Rock Candy Mountain.THU
Along with Woody Guthrie, Ives was one of a generation ofTHU
musicians who were rediscovering American folk music,THU
performing it to politicise their audiences as well asTHU
entertain them. Ives was also a talented actor, and duringTHU
the Second World War, he found success in several roles inTHU
Broadway productions. Subsequently he won an Oscar for hisTHU
role in the 1958 film, The Big Country.THU
Like many other left-wing artists, Ives faced blacklistingTHU
in the late 1940s, when he was listed in a McCarthyiteTHU
publication as having possible communist connections. ButTHU
Ives survived the House UnAmerican Activities CommitteeTHU
two years later, by informing against other folkTHU
musicians, notably Pete Seeger. In 1993, however, twoTHU
years before Ives' death, Seeger forgave him and the twoTHU
were reunited and sang at a benefit concert in New York.THU
CP Lee explores Ives' rise to fame, his music, and theTHU
dilemmas he faced, with the help of veteran American folkTHU
singer Julie Felix. They recall the music and theTHU
influence of a man whose career spanned more than oneTHU
troubled period in American history, and who is bestTHU
remembered today for the songs he recorded for children.THU
