The SUN plants spend two years out in the fields without being SUN harvested, allowing the roots to store energy. They're then SUN transferred into heated sheds, where they're kept in SUN complete darkness. In the warmth, the plants begin to grow, SUN looking for light. The process results in distinctive pink SUN stalks, which - unlike rhubarb grown outdoors - are white SUN inside, and sweeter than the unforced variety. To avoid SUN letting light near the plants, the crop is harvested by SUN candlelight. SUN SUN With soil and a microclimate well suited to rhubarb, the SUN area between Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield became known as SUN the 'rhubarb triangle'. Production of forced rhubarb began SUN here in 1877, and at its peak, in the years leading up to SUN World War Two, rhubarb production covered an area of around SUN 30 square miles. By the 1940s there were 200 tonnes leaving SUN Yorkshire by train every day on the Rhubarb Express, much of SUN it bound for Covent Garden in London. But with its SUN connotations of wartime rationing and school dinners, SUN rhubarb declined in popularity after the war, as new SUN tropical fruits arrived on the shelves. From a peak of more SUN than 200 forced rhubarb producers in area, there are now SUN just eleven. Latterly, SUN he joined a missionary brotherhood in Oxford, and was SUN ordained as a priest in Leeds in 1885. SUN SUN Until his death in 1918, Thomas Horne was a vigorous SUN campaigner for the rights of travelling people. With his SUN education, training as a priest, and family association with SUN the fairground, he was their ideal representative. He SUN travelled throughout the country, preaching to showfolk and, SUN in one year alone, he travelled over 12,000 miles, visiting SUN fairs as far apart as Penzance in Cornwall to Ayr in SUN Scotland. THU THU One of the finest works of the Spanish Golden Age and the THU only surviving nude by Velázquez, The Rokeby Venus was THU painted during the Spanish Inquisition, escaped censorship, THU was brought to Britain, and was the first artwork to be THU saved for the nation by the National Art Collections Fund in THU 1906. In what became one of the most famous and symbolic THU acts of 20th century iconoclasm, on March 10th, 1914, the THU painting was badly damaged by Mary Richardson in the THU National Gallery in London. In a statement she said that she THU had "tried to destroy the picture of the most beautiful THU woman in mythological history as a protest against the THU Government for destroying Mrs. Pankhurst, who is the most THU beautiful character in modern history". FRI FRI Carmen Callil set out to change the world with her FRI pioneering feminist publishing house, Virago Press. Arriving FRI in London from Australia in 1960, she started as a FRI "publicity girl", then one of the few publishing jobs FRI available to women who did not want to be secretaries. FRI FRI In 1973 she founded Virago Press to "publish books by women FRI which celebrated women's lives, and which would, by so FRI doing, spread the message of women's liberation to the whole FRI population". Virago's first publication was Fenwomen: A FRI Portrait of Women in an English Village by Mary Chamberlain. FRI This oral history set out as Virago meant to go on, giving FRI voice to previously silent women. FRI FRI Despite some criticism from the established literary world, FRI Virago quickly became a success. In 1978, Carmen launched FRI the hugely influential Modern Classics series, with their FRI distinctive green spines, celebrating and reviving the work FRI of hundreds of often neglected female writers. Since then, FRI the Modern Classics series has become Virago's hallmark. FRI FRI Carmen left Virago to run Chatto in the 80s, and retired FRI from publishing in 1994. The company she founded over 40 FRI years ago has evolved and changed, yet the founding FRI principles remain the same, to publish the best of women's FRI writing and to celebrate women's lives thorough literature.
