SAT SAT Russian dancers feature heavily in Strictly Come Dancing, SAT its American counterpart Dancing with the Stars, and in SAT ballroom dance championships worldwide. So what makes them SAT so good? SAT SAT Growing up in Soviet Russia in the 1980s, Kristina Rihanoff SAT was groomed for success from an early age, but her parents SAT could not afford to pay for dance lessons and travel to SAT competitions - everything was paid for by the state. SAT SAT For dancers from previous generations, it was a very SAT different story. Former Russian champions, Marina and Taliat SAT Tarsinov and Leonid Pletnev began their dance career in the SAT 1970s. So determined were they to pick up dance steps, they SAT learned from books and films smuggled into the country and SAT took part in secret ballroom dance competitions at night. To SAT the Soviet authorities, they were 'agents of bourgeois SAT ideology'. SAT SAT After the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s, SAT times were tough for Gleb Savchenko's family in Moscow. SAT Strictly's latest Russian recruit, Gleb, would beg his SAT father for money for dance lessons and drove him into a rage SAT when he announced he wanted to move to Miami. Now many SAT Russians like Marina and Taliat Tarsinov have bought into SAT the Fred Astaire Dance School franchise in America, passing SAT on their dance skills and picking up skills in business. SAT SAT The new Russian elite attend international balls that hark SAT back to those of 19th century Tsarist Russia with their SAT Russian debutantes and Tchaikovsky waltzes. Do the next SAT generation of Russian ballroom dancers have the same drive SAT to succeed SAT SAT An Overtone production for BBC Radio 4. SAT SAT The song became a hit when performed in 1959 by Bobby Darin. SAT Ella Fitzgerald famously forgot the words when performing SAT live in Berlin in 1960 and her improvised version won a SAT Grammy. SAT SAT Suzi Quatro talks about how she performed it with her father SAT as a child, playing bongos to accompany him, and Lenny Kaye SAT from the Patti Smith Group recalls how he and Patti did a SAT version of 'Mack The Knife' at their first ever performance SAT together at St Marks Church in New York on 10th February SAT 1971, as it was Brecht's birthday. SAT SAT When Tim Peake flies to the International Space Station, he SAT will become Britain's first official astronaut. But he won't SAT be the first Briton in space. At the end of the Second World SAT War, Britain had the skills to develop its own human space SAT flight programme. But the government decided to invest in SAT satellite technology. SAT SAT Drawing on little-heard radio and television archive from SAT the 1950s, Richard Hollingham discovers that, despite SAT government indifference, there was a widely-held belief that SAT Britain would soon have its own astronauts. SAT SAT Richard tells the forgotten story of two servicemen, Nigel SAT Wood and Richard Farrimond, who joined the Space Shuttle SAT programme as satellite payload specialists. Their flight was SAT cancelled after the Challenger explosion in January 1986. In SAT 1991, Helen Sharman became Britain's first cosmonaut when SAT she spent eight days on the Russian spaceship Mir. SAT SAT 22:15 Moral Maze b06r81v7 (Listen) SAT Selfie Culture SAT SAT The wobbly mobile phone footage and someone calling out "you SAT ain't no Muslim bruv" has given us a powerful rallying cry. SAT It was filmed by a bystander as police restrained a man SAT who's since been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder. SAT What it doesn't show is how one very brave man fought to try SAT and disarm the attacker, while people stood around filming SAT it all on their phones. Mobile phone footage has now become SAT a staple of our news and not so private lives. Which one of SAT us hasn't clicked on a link and experienced a vicarious SAT thrill from watching the latest talked about clip of death, SAT disaster or embarrassment? It is undeniably useful too, but SAT what are the moral consequences of videoing and displaying SAT everything in public? Does looking through the prism of a SAT phone camera create a kind of moral distance that atrophies SAT human capacities like empathy, compassion and SAT self--reflection? The instinct to say 'I was there' is SAT immensely strong, but earlier this year there were a number SAT of cases bystanders filming distressed people as they SAT threatened to jump to their deaths. Are we trying to give SAT life meaning by creating a permanent record of it, instead SAT of by thinking more deeply about it and living life in the SAT moment? Is the craze for selfies just a harmless piece of SAT fun or are we gradually being infected with a narcissistic SAT personality disorder? Or is the drive to record everything SAT and to make our lives public, part of what makes us human? SAT And mobile phone footage is just today's equivalent of SAT ancient cave paintings of hunting scenes? Live our life on SAT film - the Moral Maze. SAT SAT Producer: Paul Bajoria. SUN SUN Liz Bonnin presents the diminutive spoon-billed sandpiper of SUN the high Russian tundra. Spoon-billed sandpipers are wading SUN birds, no bigger than a house sparrow. They have SUN rust-coloured feathers and a black, spoon-shaped bill for SUN sifting tiny creatures from the mud or catching insects on SUN the tundra of eastern Russia, where they breed. In winter SUN they fly down to south-east Asian estuaries. Here they are SUN increasingly threatened by the reclamation of mudflats for SUN development and by local people who trap the waders in fine SUN nests to eat. Today, there may be fewer than a thousand SUN birds left. SUN SUN Born and raised in Auckland, an experience with some French SUN cheeses in Paris changed everything for Juliet, who decided SUN there and then that cheese would be her life's focus. SUN SUN She sold her deli-restaurant in Wellington and moved all the SUN way to London, to open up a cheese shop based on her SUN experiences in France. SUN SUN 13:30 Shoah in Jerusalem b06rwgd1 (Listen) SUN The extraordinary story of the day an epic Holocaust SUN documentary was premiered in Israel. SUN SUN Thirty years ago Claude Lanzmann released his epic, nine and SUN a half hour documentary of the Holocaust, Shoah. Watching it SUN the day it was screened in Israel for the first time, were SUN the country's prime minister, president, chief rabbi and SUN head of the military. It was all but a state occasion. SUN SUN But also in the audience were survivors of the Holocaust, SUN some watching their story told in public for the first time. SUN The occasion would become remarkably intense, with one SUN survivor collapsing following a heart attack, another SUN fainting from the emotional strain. SUN SUN Writer and broadcaster Jonathan Freedland saw the film as a SUN teenager. Now he speaks to those present at that unique SUN premiere - from the prime minister of the time, Shimon SUN Peres, to Claude Lanzmann himself. He discovers that much SUN more than a film was on display that day in Jerusalem. The SUN occasion would also prove to be a moment when Israel would SUN confront the most traumatic event in Jewish history, the SUN event that had preceded Israel's own creation and which had SUN haunted the country from its birth. SUN SUN Now he tells, for the first time, the story of those SUN extraordinary hours in the dark in a Jerusalem cinema - and SUN charts Israel's complex and troubled relationship with the SUN Holocaust. SUN SUN Chris Beardshaw, Matt Biggs and Anne Swithinbank answer this SUN week's gardening questions. SUN SUN A Somethin' Else production for BBC Radio 4. SUN SUN Questions and Answers SUN Q – Do the panel condone the use of leaf blowers or should SUN they leave them where they fall? SUN Chris – I can’t imagine using a leaf blower. I can’t SUN believe that as soon as Autumn comes and you get the SUN Anthancynins and the Xanthophylls that give you the flush of SUN autumn colours some people are out with their leaf blowers SUN before they’ve even started to fall! Also, you shouldn’t be SUN too diligent with your leaf clearing in general – on borders SUN and beds most leaves (not heavy things like Beech or SUN Sycamore) they will rot very quickly and are beneficial to SUN the soil. SUN Q – One of the crops that I love to grow is Jerusalem SUN Artichokes – how long is the harvesting season? SUN Chris – Start after the first frost when the plant has SUN started to close down and has retracted below ground and is SUN nestling in the soil then it’s at its best. But you can SUN keep it going right through the winter months and keep SUN lifting right through into spring. Don’t lift once it has SUN started to shoot again as it will go quite woody. Don’t SUN scrub them either – give them a quick wash, nothing too much SUN more. SUN Q – We are keen allotmenteers and, over time, so have our SUN children become – including my four-year-old grandson. I am SUN the chief digger and it’s got me thinking about alternative SUN methods. What is the panel’s view on the ‘no dig’ system SUN for allotmenteering and vegetable growing? SUN Anne – I’m mostly ‘no dig’ these days – the key is to make SUN sure that you spread your well-rotted organic matter in a SUN layer over the soil before Christmas so it has a chance to SUN rot down into the soil and break down more. You can start SUN ‘no dig’ on virgin ground but I haven’t tried it myself. SUN Matt – If you’re on London clay I would put about 4-5inches SUN (10-12.5cm approx.) on top like icing a cake and then the SUN worms will do the digging for you. I would grow leafy crops SUN in there. Then once the clay and the organic matter have SUN had time to come together I would start to think about root SUN crops. Go for stump rather than long-rooted to begin with. SUN SUN Q – With the popularity of trampolines in gardens what can SUN the panel suggest to plant underneath? SUN Anne – you could grow Ferns… SUN Matt – …or Ivy… but not much else! SUN Q – I am lucky enough to receive a supply of free horse SUN manure and straw from a nearby riding school – can I dig it SUN in straight away or should I leave it on the ground until SUN next year? SUN Chris – It’s important to allow the manure to rot down to SUN the point where you can plunge your hands into it and it SUN crumbles away. It shouldn’t be heavy/slimy and there SUN shouldn’t be any straw still evident in it. The inner will SUN be ready before the outer part (due to heat/exposure) – so SUN cut the top off the pile, use what’s in the middle first – SUN and then keep turning the pile in on itself. SUN Manure is far too rich to apply directly. SUN Q – I’ve had fairly good results growing Gladiolus SUN byzantinus in my garden. However, standard, larger Gladioli SUN rarely come to much, if anything. My garden soil is quite SUN poor but persistent care and composting has helped a bit but SUN what more can I do? SUN Anne – Gladiolus all need well drained soil and enriched SUN soil with well-rotted manure to keep them happy. SUN Matt – Gladiolus papilio ‘Ruby’ is a lovely plant to go with SUN the byzantinus. Also, the Flevo varieties have really funky SUN colours. Grow successionally (end of March – May/June) then SUN you’ll get a succession of flowers through the year. SUN Q – What’s the best way to grow Brussel Sprouts in a raised SUN bed? SUN Matt – Sprouts like a heavy soil and a firm seedbed to grow SUN well – which might be tricky in a raised bed. They need SUN plenty of water and be careful not to over feed – a boost of SUN nitrogen halfway through growth is enough. SUN Anne – Try using dwarf cultivars if you can. Also, sow in SUN April/May and planting out June/July. SUN Q – Is there any way that I can permanently get rid of SUN Jasmine that has taken over our garden without my husband SUN knowing?! SUN Anne – Some would suggest using glyphosate to kill off the SUN suckers. It’ll be tricky to dig it out without him noticing SUN but that is another option. SUN Chris – It’ll take a lot of hard work to dig it out of the SUN ground – they root wherever they go really. MON MON Beethoven's Spring Sonata of 1801 might lack the grandeur of MON his 7th or 9th Symphony but it was commissioned by the same MON Viennese banker as the former. It's not even his most taxing MON Violin sonata. That accolade usually goes to the Kreutzer. MON However the manuscript, complete with a relatively young MON Beethoven's grumblings about his copyist, is full of MON examples of detailed reworking and careful crafting that MON give a vivid insight into a man with far more than a sense MON of Sturm und Drang, gravity and drama. MON MON Violinist Florian Zwiauer and pianist Jan Jiracek von Arnim MON join Dr Leibnitz as they work through the three manuscript MON movements of a work which was eventually published in four. MON As well as trying to establish where the missing movement MON has gone they examine the unusually neat handwriting which MON makes it equally unusually clear how the composer set about MON his work and sought to refine it and deliver a meticulous MON score for the publisher. MON MON While the opening theme was later described, and more MON importantly marketed by 19th century publishers, as an MON evocation of Spring, Florian Zwiauer believes it's the slow MON and reverential second movement that should have given the MON piece an altogether more anglophile name - the Evensong MON sonata. TUE TUE Chris Packham presents a true global ocean going mariner, TUE the red-billed tropicbird. These elegant birds are masters TUE of the winds and tides. There are three species of TUE tropicbirds and all of them nest on tropical islands, TUE spending the rest of the year roaming the open ocean. All TUE are instantly recognisable by their very long whippy central TUE tail-feathers which can be longer than the rest of the bird. TUE With scarlet beaks, black wing-tips and white-tail streamers TUE from a distance they look all-white, but a closer view TUE reveals a narrow black mask. Red-billed Tropicbirds nest on TUE the ground and use their impossibly long tails in courtship TUE displays, moving the feathers to register excitement or TUE aggression. In flight they are graceful soarers and TUE swoopers, and often call a trill chattering rattle in TUE mid-air chases. This sound which resembles a bosun's TUE (boatswain's) whistle, gave rise to their alternative name TUE of 'Bosun Bird'. Her memoir TUE describes growing up in the 1930s and 1940s but its real TUE concern is with her growing love of History. The fascination TUE began as a child - and developed into an enduring passion. TUE She writes, 'for me, the study of History has always been an TUE essential part of the enjoyment of life'. TUE TUE Born Antonia Pakenham, the eldest of the eight children of TUE the future Lord and Lady Longford, her childhood was spent TUE in Oxford where her father was a don at Christ Church. TUE Evacuation at the beginning of the war to a romantic TUE Elizabethan manor house near Oxford was an inspiration for TUE historical imaginings. There were adventures in TUE Anglo-Ireland at Dunsany Castle and Pakenham Hall, each TUE offering her treasured links to the past, which became TUE private obsessions. TUE TUE North Oxford wartime life included four years as one of the TUE few girls then admitted to the Dragon School for Boys, TUE followed by time at a convent school after her family's TUE conversion to Catholicism. Antonia's father joined the TUE Labour Government in 1945 as a Minister, which provided an TUE odd background for exploits such as working in a Bond Street TUE hat shop and a season as a self-made debutante. A job in TUE publishing, by a fortunate coincidence, followed Oxford TUE University and then the dramatic leap forward with the TUE publishing of Mary Queen of Scots, which became a worldwide TUE bestseller to general amazement - including that of the TUE author. The isolated Galapagos Islands are WED famous for their unique wildlife which has evolved to adapt WED to a landscape free of predators. This absence of predators WED has allowed the native cormorant to dispense with the need WED to fly, why waste energy when there's nothing to fly away WED from? This is the only flightless member of the cormorant WED family, which feeds on fish and for that reason it has WED developed stronger feet for swimming after its prey. They WED nest on the rocky coasts of Fernandina and Isabela islands WED and the population can dip below a thousand birds especially WED after hurricanes or collapses in local fish numbers. WED WED Born Antonia Pakenham, the eldest of the eight children of WED the future Lord and Lady Longford, her childhood was spent WED in Oxford where her father was a don at Christ Church. THU THU Chris Packham presents the superbly camouflaged great snipe THU of Eastern Europe. A thin drizzle of tinkling notes mingled THU with rhythmic tapping drifts across a Polish marsh in spring THU a sign that great male snipes are displaying. Great snipe THU are wading birds with short legs and very long two-toned THU bills, which they use to probe bogs and wet ground for THU worms. Across much of Europe having newly returned from its THU sub-Saharan wintering grounds a number of northern and THU eastern European marshes, set stage as breeding sites for THU the larger, great snipe. They court females at traditional THU lekking or displaying grounds where several males vie for THU attention. THU THU Born Antonia Pakenham, the eldest of the eight children of THU the future Lord and Lady Longford, her childhood was spent THU in Oxford where her father was a don at Christ Church. THU THU North Oxford wartime life included four years as one of the THU few girls then admitted to the Dragon School for Boys, THU followed by time at a convent school after her family's THU conversion to Catholicism. Antonia's father joined the THU Labour Government in 1945 as a Minister, which provided an THU odd background for exploits such as working in a Bond Street THU hat shop and a season as a self-made debutante.
