The importance of the emotional brain. Since Plato,TUE
philosophers have described the decision-making process asTUE
either rational or emotional: we carefully deliberate orTUE
we go with our gut instinct.TUE
But as scientists break open the mind's black box with theTUE
latest tools of neuroscience, they are discovering thatTUE
this is not an accurate picture of how the mind works. OurTUE
best decisions are a finely-tuned blend of both feelingTUE
and reason, and the precise mix depends on the situation.TUE

11:00 Fixing the Pedigree Dog b00htl96 (Listen)TUE
Sue Broom looks at the genetics and health of pedigreeTUE
dogs and asks if modern science and an understanding ofTUE
genetics can produce a solution to make them healthier.TUE
A recent TV documentary highlighted some severe healthTUE
problems in a number of pedigree dog breeds. The breeds ofTUE
most concern include Cavalier King Charles Spaniels withTUE
syringiomyelia, a neurological disorder thought to beTUE
caused by too small a skull squeezing the brain. AlsoTUE
German shepherd dogs and Neapolitan mastiffs have a highTUE
incidence of hip dysplasia and Basset and Bloodhounds bredTUE
to be too heavy leaving them prone to arthritis and backTUE
problems.TUE
However, as Sue discovers, there are changes being made toTUE
the way that pedigree dogs are being bred. The Kennel ClubTUE
has implemented its Fit for Function, Fit for LifeTUE
campaign. Also, Crufts will be introducing new breedTUE
standards, the blueprint for a show dog. They are in theTUE
process of training judges to select dogs not only onTUE
their looks but also on their health.TUE
These changes are welcomed by the RSPCA, but they do notTUE
believe that they go far enough and are concerned that theTUE
changes in the breed standards are too vague and open toTUE
too much interpretation by judges, many of whom areTUE
themselves breeders.TUE
Certain breed groups do not like being dictated to andTUE
think that the problems are being overblown. But some dogTUE
breeders are actively seeking out DNA tests for disordersTUE
that affect their breed and using this information toTUE
'breed out' unhealthy genes from their stock.TUE
Sue finds out what this shake-up of the pedigree dogTUE
breeding world will mean for future breeds and whether orTUE
not some breeds as we know them will even survive.TUE
TUE
11:30 From Jean Brodie to Carrie Bradshaw: Spinsters inTUE
Popular Cu b00htl98 (Listen)TUE
Ann Widdecombe explores how single women have beenTUE
depicted in popular culture. From Dickens' terrifying MissTUE
Havisham and Muriel Spark's Miss Jean Brodie to CarrieTUE
Bradshaw in Sex and the City and Bridget Jones, why areTUE
single women so often represented as manipulative, bitter,TUE
or just desperate for a man?TUE
Ann is content with her single status, and wants to knowTUE
why it is hard to find examples of truly happy spinstersTUE
in books or on screen. She explores the horror that DavidTUE
Lean's depiction of Miss Havisham evoked in many of theTUE
generation that came of age in the 1940s. She goes back toTUE
her old school in Bath to meet her former teacher and toTUE
contemplate the reality of life for single women of thatTUE
generation.TUE
Ann finds out why the author of Not Married, Not Bothered,TUE
Carol Clewlow, believes that even today Jane Austen isTUE
capable of being a 'spinster heroine' and why many womenTUE
seem to loathe the word 'spinster'. She also asks whetherTUE
Carrie Bradshaw and Bridget Jones have as much to offer usTUE
as Barbara Pym's 'excellent women' of the 1950s and 60s.TUE
Finally, she discovers that the word 'spinster' might beTUE
loathed, but it is far from defunct, as some journalistsTUE
are now referring to single men as 'male spinsters'.TUE

Prison, or by the inclusion of the founding declaration ofTUE

Not only did she dare to reveal her lower legs - and justTUE

run her own theatre. Eliza started off as an opera singer,TUE
but made her mark as one of the first stars of burlesque.TUE
Eliza Vestris' most successful performance was as DonTUE
Giovanni in Giovanni in London, a burlesque based onTUE
Mozart's opera. This daring part helped make Eliza one ofTUE
the most famous performers in the country.TUE
As founder of the Ministry of Burlesque, Kirsty is keen toTUE

21:00 Am I Normal? b00htn08 (Listen)TUE
Series 6, Post-natal DepressionTUE
Vivienne Parry continues her quest to find out what isTUE
normal.TUE
She investigates post-natal depression. More women thanTUE
ever are being diagnosed with the condition, so doesTUE
motherhood make women miserable or are we turning aTUE
normal, if difficult, psychological transition into anTUE
illness?TUE
If you ask a woman who has just had a baby if she has feltTUE
sad or miserable in the last seven days, there is a fairTUE
chance that she will say yes. You might get a similarTUE
answer if you ask if she has felt scared or panicky for noTUE
good reason. These are questions on the Edinburgh PostTUE
Natal Depression Scale, a self reporting tool developed inTUE
1987 to help identify women with post-natal depression.TUE
The scale is now widely used by health professionals asTUE
part of efforts to help women who are strugglingTUE
psychologically to access the help and support they need.TUE
However, critics claim that the scale picks up too manyTUE
women who are indeed having a hard time but who are notTUE
depressed and still fails to spot women at the more severeTUE
end of the depression spectrum. So are we now better atTUE
identifying and helping women who are depressed postTUE
natally?TUE
Vivienne Parry talks to psychiatrists Roch Cantwell andTUE
Paul Ramchandani, novelist Rachel Cusk, sociologist EllieTUE
Lee and several mothers about what they think is normal inTUE
the post-natal period.TUE

From Heroes to ZeroesWED
Sarfraz Manzoor examines the forces that have had anWED
impact on the traditional 'working class' in Britain.WED
After a decade of supposed 'classlessness', the issue ofWED
class is back on the agenda. Once again, it matters if youWED
identify yourself as working class, especially, it seems,WED
if you are white.WED
The working class may have historically been aligned withWED
the labour movement, but Margaret Thatcher's astuteWED
recognition of strong individualistic aspirations - suchWED
as the desire to own a home - changed the politicalWED
landscape in ways that are still evident nearly 30 yearsWED
on.WED
Sarfraz visits housing estates in Manchester and talks toWED
schoolchildren, academics and politicians about the futureWED
of the working class.WED

George Augustus SalaWED
Series in which different presenters tell the story of aWED
character from history that they identify with.WED
Con Coughlin of The Daily Telegraph tells the colourfulWED
story of Victorian journalist George Augustus Sala, one ofWED
the best known writers of his day, whose career took offWED
when Charles Dickens spotted his talent and published hisWED
work in Household Words.WED
Sala joined The Daily Telegraph shortly after its launchWED
in the mid-19th Century, becoming a prolific leader writerWED
and an adventurous and well-travelled foreignWED
correspondent.WED
He reported on the American Civil War, where his southernWED
sympathies made him an unpopular figure, and theWED
Franco-Prussian war, where he was arrested and thrown intoWED
jail, accused of being a spy. He would never travelWED
anywhere without a revolver, a corkscrew, and a 'littleWED
huswife full of pins, needles and buttons'.WED
Coughlin explores the parallels that he sees betweenWED
Sala's career and his own.WED

16:30 Am I Normal? b00htn08 (Listen)WED
Series 6, Post-natal DepressionWED
Vivienne Parry continues her quest to find out what isWED
normal.WED
She investigates post-natal depression. More women thanWED
ever are being diagnosed with the condition, so doesWED
motherhood make women miserable or are we turning aWED
normal, if difficult, psychological transition into anWED
illness?WED
If you ask a woman who has just had a baby if she has feltWED
sad or miserable in the last seven days, there is a fairWED
chance that she will say yes. You might get a similarWED
answer if you ask if she has felt scared or panicky for noWED
good reason. These are questions on the Edinburgh PostWED
Natal Depression Scale, a self reporting tool developed inWED
1987 to help identify women with post-natal depression.WED
The scale is now widely used by health professionals asWED
part of efforts to help women who are strugglingWED
psychologically to access the help and support they need.WED
However, critics claim that the scale picks up too manyWED
women who are indeed having a hard time but who are notWED
depressed and still fails to spot women at the more severeWED
end of the depression spectrum. So are we now better atWED
identifying and helping women who are depressed postWED
natally?WED
Vivienne Parry talks to psychiatrists Roch Cantwell andWED
Paul Ramchandani, novelist Rachel Cusk, sociologist EllieWED
Lee and several mothers about what they think is normal inWED
the post-natal period.WED

21:00 Percy Edwards Showdown b00htwx7 (Listen)WED
David Attenborough hosts a celebration of birdWED
impersonator Percy Edwards, who enjoyed a 70-year careerWED
impersonating birds and beasts. The programme combines theWED
strange story of Percy's life with archive of hisWED
impersonations, interviews with those who knew him and aWED
quiz. Guests include Bill Oddie and the comedian AlexWED
Horne.WED
Percy Edwards discovered his talent for talking likeWED
animals when he was seven. Dozing under a tree, he heardWED
what he thought was a wolf-whistle and discovered that itWED
was a bird. For several weeks, Edwards kept hearing thisWED
greenfinch and found that he could imitate it. He evenWED
took to eating canary seed before going to bed in the hopeWED
that he would wake in the morning singing like a bird.WED
Eventually Percy was able to produce the sound of moreWED
than 600 birds, and some other animals. His was the voiceWED
of the killer whale in Orca, the alien in Alien and heWED
provided sheep noises for Kate Bush's song The Dreaming.WED
Percy took to the stage aged 11, was a stalwart of theWED
Generation Game in the 1970s and gave his finalWED
performance aged 80 at the London Palladium in 1989. HisWED
repertoire was extraordinary - all 13 calls of theWED
chaffinch, the strangely grinding sound of the amorousWED
capercaille and corgis barking in Welsh accents.WED
Quizmaster David Attenborough plays bird calls for theWED
teams to identify, some of which will not be the birds butWED
Percy's impressions - can they tell the difference? WovenWED
into the rounds will be snippets about Percy's life fromWED
the BBC archive, including appearances on Parkinson, WoganWED
and Morecambe and Wise, revealing the importance of hisWED
work in raising the public's awareness of wildlife and theWED
significance of his role as an ornithologist.WED

of his people in Turkey in 1895. He settled in Worcester,FRI
Massachusetts and, along with many other Armenians, took aFRI
job in the local wire factory. There he worked long, hotFRI
hours but was determined to make a better life, andFRI
dedicated himself to years of evening classes.FRI
Eventually he decided to try for a career as a dentist,FRI
and in 1902 was accepted by Harvard Dental School,FRI
qualifying in 1905. He was happily married andFRI
successfully running his own dental practice when theFRI
First World War broke out. He volunteered to join theFRI
Harvard Medical Corps, and was posted to a huge tentedFRI
hospital complex in northern France.FRI
There he began to treat some of the worst injuriesFRI
suffered in trench warfare: jaws, noses, cheeks and skullsFRI
shattered by bullets and grenades. Although he was not aFRI
qualified surgeon, he had become known for treating theFRI
kind of facial injuries and disfigurements neglected byFRI
the general medical community, and he brought this passionFRI
and expertise to bear in France.FRI
Many soldiers, who would otherwise have suffered dreadfulFRI
scarring and lifelong pain, had their injuries expertlyFRI
treated by Kazanjian. It was said that he advanced theFRI
field of plastic surgery by 50 years during the four yearsFRI
he served the British army. He received an honoraryFRI
knighthood from King George V and became one of the mostFRI
respected reconstructive facial surgeons in the world, atFRI
one stage treating Sigmund Freud, whose jaw had been eatenFRI
away by cancer.FRI
Professor Iain Hutchison is founder and chief executive ofFRI
the Facial Surgery Research Foundation and is one of theFRI
world's leading reconstructive facial surgeons. His firstFRI
career was in dentistry, before specialising in oral andFRI
maxillo-facial surgery, and, like Kazanjian, he hasFRI
operated on some of the most difficult cases of facialFRI
injury and disfigurement, all the while advancing thisFRI
particular area of surgery.FRI
