The breeds ofTUEmost concern include Cavalier King Charles Spaniels withTUEsyringiomyelia, a neurological disorder thought to beTUEcaused by too small a skull squeezing the brain. AlsoTUEGerman shepherd dogs and Neapolitan mastiffs have a highTUEincidence of hip dysplasia and Basset and Bloodhounds bredTUEto be too heavy leaving them prone to arthritis and backTUEproblems.TUEHowever, as Sue discovers, there are changes being made toTUEthe way that pedigree dogs are being bred. The Kennel ClubTUEhas implemented its Fit for Function, Fit for LifeTUEcampaign. Also, Crufts will be introducing new breedTUEstandards, the blueprint for a show dog. They are in theTUEprocess of training judges to select dogs not only onTUEtheir looks but also on their health.TUEThese changes are welcomed by the RSPCA, but they do notTUEbelieve that they go far enough and are concerned that theTUEchanges in the breed standards are too vague and open toTUEtoo much interpretation by judges, many of whom areTUEthemselves breeders.TUECertain breed groups do not like being dictated to andTUEthink that the problems are being overblown. But some dogTUEbreeders are actively seeking out DNA tests for disordersTUEthat affect their breed and using this information toTUE'breed out' unhealthy genes from their stock.TUESue finds out what this shake-up of the pedigree dogTUEbreeding world will mean for future breeds and whether orTUEnot some breeds as we know them will even survive.TUETUE11:30 From Jean Brodie to Carrie Bradshaw: Spinsters inTUEPopular Cu b00htl98 (Listen)TUEAnn Widdecombe explores how single women have beenTUEdepicted in popular culture. From Dickens' terrifying MissTUEHavisham and Muriel Spark's Miss Jean Brodie to CarrieTUEBradshaw in Sex and the City and Bridget Jones, why areTUEsingle women so often represented as manipulative, bitter,TUEor just desperate for a man?TUEAnn is content with her single status, and wants to knowTUEwhy it is hard to find examples of truly happy spinstersTUEin books or on screen. She explores the horror that DavidTUELean's depiction of Miss Havisham evoked in many of theTUEgeneration that came of age in the 1940s. She goes back toTUEher old school in Bath to meet her former teacher and toTUEcontemplate the reality of life for single women of thatTUEgeneration.TUEAnn finds out why the author of Not Married, Not Bothered,TUECarol Clewlow, believes that even today Jane Austen isTUEcapable of being a 'spinster heroine' and why many womenTUEseem to loathe the word 'spinster'. She also asks whetherTUECarrie Bradshaw and Bridget Jones have as much to offer usTUEas Barbara Pym's 'excellent women' of the 1950s and 60s.TUEFinally, she discovers that the word 'spinster' might beTUEloathed, but it is far from defunct, as some journalistsTUEare now referring to single men as 'male spinsters'.TUETUE12:00 You and Yours b00hsrbf (Listen)TUEConsumer news and issues with Winifred Robinson.TUETUE12:57 Weather b00hsrcz (Listen)TUEThe latest weather forecast.TUETUE13:00 World at One b00hsrgy (Listen)TUENational and international news with Shaun Ley.TUETUE13:30 Sleeve Notes b00htmzr (Listen)TUEMusic writer Laura Barton explains her love of the sleeveTUEnote, which was once, for many, the cherished gateway intoTUEa musical world but has now been diminished by theTUEdigitalisation of music.TUEShe considers how the sleeve note can act as a declarationTUEof intent from the artist, as epitomised by Johnny Cash'sTUEsleeve notes for his classic 1968 live album, At FolsomTUEPrison, or by the inclusion of the founding declaration ofTUEthe Rock Against Racism movement on the sleeve of TomTUERobinson's debut album Power in the Darkness.TUEPoet Simon Armitage talks about being commissioned by PaulTUEWeller to write the sleeve notes for his latest album.TUETUE14:00 The Archers b00hsrjy (Listen)TUEThe tables are turned at Home Farm.TUETUE14:15 Afternoon Play b00htmzt (Listen)TUEThe Lemon SqueezerTUEComedy by Triona Adams.
