SAT Pinter on Air
SAT Ian Smith, author of Pinter in the Theatre and a friend of
SAT the late playwright, rediscovers the vital role that a
SAT series of successful radio and television dramas played in
SAT making Harold Pinter's name.
SAT He draws on a recently released archive of letters written
SAT to Pinter by listeners and viewers of these plays. They
SAT strikingly reveal how audiences well beyond London's West
SAT End responded to the broadcasts, many of them written not
SAT for the stage but specially for radio or TV.
SAT Ian also uses Pinter's early revue sketches and a letter
SAT from Sid James to examine how Pinter's work was not just
SAT funny, but foreshadowed much mainstream British TV comedy,
SAT from Steptoe and Son to Smith and Jones.
SAT He explores the way in which BBC Radio's Third Programme
SAT nurtured the teenage Pinter's enthusiasm for culture and
SAT subsequently hired him as an actor and how, in the wake of
SAT the flop of his first major stage play at the end of the
SAT 1950s, it was BBC Radio that sustained him as a writer.
SAT Ian delves into the BBC archive to listen to the early
SAT Pinter classics which flowed from these commissions, such
SAT as A Slight Ache. He reunites some of the cast of one of
SAT Pinter's early hits, A Night Out, to find out what it was
SAT like working on one of the very first Pinter scripts.
SAT Finally, he examines how, in the 1960s, television
SAT repeatedly won Pinter an audience of millions for his
SAT work. He watches some of Pinter's original plays for TV,
SAT including Tea Party and The Basement, and hears from some
SAT of those most closely involved in making them. Ian
SAT discovers that these pieces allowed Pinter to push his
SAT highly original dramatic strategies to their limits, and
SAT how they were a vital part of his breakthrough as one of
SAT Britain's greatest dramatic writers.
SAT Featuring contributions from Sir Peter Hall, Barbara Bray,
SAT Michael Bakewell, Christopher Morahan, Dominic Sandbrook,
SAT Benedict Nightingale, Michael Rosen, Eileen Diss, Philip
SAT Saville, Auriol Smith, John Rye and Hugh Dickson.

MON Pinter on Air
MON Ian Smith, author of Pinter in the Theatre and a friend of
MON the late playwright, rediscovers the vital role that a
MON series of successful radio and television dramas played in
MON making Harold Pinter's name.
MON He draws on a recently released archive of letters written
MON to Pinter by listeners and viewers of these plays. They
MON strikingly reveal how audiences well beyond London's West
MON End responded to the broadcasts, many of them written not
MON for the stage but specially for radio or TV.
MON Ian also uses Pinter's early revue sketches and a letter
MON from Sid James to examine how Pinter's work was not just
MON funny, but foreshadowed much mainstream British TV comedy,
MON from Steptoe and Son to Smith and Jones.
MON He explores the way in which BBC Radio's Third Programme
MON nurtured the teenage Pinter's enthusiasm for culture and
MON subsequently hired him as an actor and how, in the wake of
MON the flop of his first major stage play at the end of the
MON 1950s, it was BBC Radio that sustained him as a writer.
MON Ian delves into the BBC archive to listen to the early
MON Pinter classics which flowed from these commissions, such
MON as A Slight Ache. He reunites some of the cast of one of
MON Pinter's early hits, A Night Out, to find out what it was
MON like working on one of the very first Pinter scripts.
MON Finally, he examines how, in the 1960s, television
MON repeatedly won Pinter an audience of millions for his
MON work. He watches some of Pinter's original plays for TV,
MON including Tea Party and The Basement, and hears from some
MON of those most closely involved in making them. Ian
MON discovers that these pieces allowed Pinter to push his
MON highly original dramatic strategies to their limits, and
MON how they were a vital part of his breakthrough as one of
MON Britain's greatest dramatic writers.
MON Featuring contributions from Sir Peter Hall, Barbara Bray,
MON Michael Bakewell, Christopher Morahan, Dominic Sandbrook,
MON Benedict Nightingale, Michael Rosen, Eileen Diss, Philip
MON Saville, Auriol Smith, John Rye and Hugh Dickson.

MON Episode 2
MON Psychoanalyst and former England captain Mike Brearley
MON travels to India to explore the vibrant and complex
MON relationship between the nation's emergence as an economic
MON power and its love of cricket.
MON India has come to follow cricket with a verve and
MON intensity that would have amazed, and possibly dismayed,
MON the Victorian adventurers who first brought the game to
MON its shores. As a national sport, Indian cricket has no
MON parallel. There may be more money in American basketball
MON and as much passion in Brazilian soccer. But two things
MON distinguish this sport in India that are unmatched
MON anywhere else on the globe. The first is the numbers, with
MON 500 million people taking part in the game. The second is
MON history, and the way in which India's national identity
MON and its economic and social life is so bound up in it.
MON Mike talks to historians, administrators and some of the
MON Indian game's most important figures, including Sachin
MON Tendulkar and Bishen Bedi, about the future of cricket in
MON India and its implications for the game throughout the
MON world.
