The SUN plants spend two years out in the fields without being SUN harvested, allowing the roots to store energy. They're then SUN transferred into heated sheds, where they're kept in SUN complete darkness. In the warmth, the plants begin to grow, SUN looking for light. The process results in distinctive pink SUN stalks, which - unlike rhubarb grown outdoors - are white SUN inside, and sweeter than the unforced variety. To avoid SUN letting light near the plants, the crop is harvested by SUN candlelight. SUN SUN With soil and a microclimate well suited to rhubarb, the SUN area between Leeds, Bradford and Wakefield became known as SUN the 'rhubarb triangle'. Production of forced rhubarb began SUN here in 1877, and at its peak, in the years leading up to SUN World War Two, rhubarb production covered an area of around SUN 30 square miles. By the 1940s there were 200 tonnes leaving SUN Yorkshire by train every day on the Rhubarb Express, much of SUN it bound for Covent Garden in London. But with its SUN connotations of wartime rationing and school dinners, SUN rhubarb declined in popularity after the war, as new SUN tropical fruits arrived on the shelves. From a peak of more SUN than 200 forced rhubarb producers in area, there are now SUN just eleven. SUN SUN A. Bob has been trying out new varieties of carrots, SUN including red, purple, yellow and white carrots. Anne is SUN going to experiment with different varieties of pumpkin and SUN squash. Bunny is going to plant Rainbow Beetroot. SUN SUN Q. I can grow Embothrium coccineum (Chilean Firebush) in SUN South West Scotland & South West England. Why is it so SUN difficult in North West England? SUN SUN A. Embothrium coccineum depends on an acidic soil and warmer SUN temperatures. Scotland and the south of England benefit from SUN the impact of the Gulf Stream. SUN SUN Q. Could the panel suggest some shrubs that will survive SUN altitude, poor weather and possible neglect? SUN SUN A. A rose would be recommended such as the Bengal Beauty SUN Rose. It is a bright purple rose which can flower throughout SUN winter. This would go well with an evergreen such as Holly, SUN for example Hedgehog Holly or Castanifolia. It is worth SUN noting that Holly can take up to two years until it begins SUN to flourish. Another suggestion would be the Philadelphus SUN Manteau d'Hermine, which is a type of mock orange and is SUN extremely scented when in flower. Dwarf Lilacs, such as the SUN Palibin Lilac, would be nice and fragrant. Finally, for SUN something slightly more challenging, try Daphne Odora SUN Aureomarginata. SUN SUN Q. Our garden is long, flat and boggy for most of the year. SUN What would the panel recommend to plant in a border shaded SUN by a Beech hedge? SUN SUN A. A small herbaceous plant Geums (Water Avens) would be SUN recommended, as they do not mind boggy soils. Troilus SUN Buttercup tolerates moisture and shady environments. Try SUN Rheum palmatum or the Purpureum variety for large purple SUN leaves. Hydrangea Argentina would compliment the Rheum SUN palmatum nicely. Finally, Canna iridiflora would love these SUN conditions and would flower from July to November. SUN SUN Q. We have planted a small vineyard on our allotment site; SUN we have had success with 150 bottles of wine made with our SUN latest harvest. However five vines have withered and died. SUN Could the panel suggest what might have caused this and is SUN the plan to replace like for like ideal? SUN SUN A. The most likely cause is vine weevil. Dig around and see SUN if you can find a sign of them. They can be sorted by using SUN a vine weevil cure when the soil is warm and wet. SUN SUN Q. I have a rockery covered with unwanted plants, grass and SUN bindweed. Do the panel have a suggestion for a solution to SUN get rid of them? SUN SUN A. Bunny would recommend glyphosate weed killer but advises SUN not to use it when it is going to rain within six hours. It SUN is meant to be used in the spring but can be used in cold SUN temperatures if applied more often. Bob would suggest SUN pouring boiling water on the rocks regularly and/or hand SUN weeding. TUE TUE Working at a nuclear weapons laboratory in the US, he TUE enjoyed huge budgets and the freedom to make the most TUE amazing materials. But he gave that up to work with artists TUE and designers because he believes that if you ignore the TUE sensual aspects of materials, you end up with materials that TUE people don't want. TUE TUE 11:30 A Shower of Sparks b03xf0g1 (Listen) TUE In spring 1974, alongside the established kiddie-pop of Mud, TUE Slade and the Wombles, a new act sidled onto Top Of The Pops TUE who generated more playground chatter the following morning TUE than any of the above. Brothers Ron and Russell Mael had TUE formed Sparks three years earlier, but their breakthrough TUE came with the hit song 'This Town Ain't Big Enough For Both TUE Of Us' - three minutes of staccato glam-pop that was over TUE almost as soon as it began, with near-indecipherable lyrics TUE and gunshot sound effects throughout. TUE TUE Even more intriguing than the song was the brothers' TUE appearance - corkscrew-haired Russell bouncing around the TUE stage singing falsetto, while Ron stood virtually motionless TUE at a piano in the background with a Hitler moustache and TUE pursed lips, his eyes moving from side to side. TUE No one would even have guessed that they were brothers, but TUE the Maels' chalk-and-cheese stage personae created a visual TUE image which won them many more Top Of The Pops appearances TUE and many more hits. Moreover, their image came to set the TUE tone for a generation of electro-pop bands such as Soft Cell TUE and the Pet Shop Boys - who followed the template of a TUE charismatic frontman with a virtually motionless TUE keyboard-playing wonk in the background, both of whose TUE contributions were vital to the act. TUE TUE In this programme the Mael brothers talk to Stuart Maconie TUE about the relationship that led them into the music business TUE and has seen them through a career of startling longevity, TUE defying those who dismissed them as just another novelty TUE act. Forty years on, Sparks are working on their 22nd studio TUE album and still have music critics eating out of their TUE hands. Always Anglophile by instinct, they have consistently TUE enjoyed more success here than in their native USA - though TUE they have played a long game, content to issue music TUE sporadically and on their own terms rather than always to TUE pursue the next hit. Their quirky creativity and refusal to TUE play industry games have won them many prominent admirers TUE among writers and musicians, notably Morrissey, Julie TUE Burchill and Björk. The doctrine was often controversial in the early THU years of the Church, until clarified by the Council of THU Nicaea in the late 4th century. Later thinkers including St THU Augustine and Thomas Aquinas recognised that this religious THU mystery posed profound theological questions, such as THU whether the three persons of the Trinity always acted THU together, and whether they were of equal status. THU THU 11:30 Venus in View b03xgl3y (Listen) THU Marking the centenary of the attack by the militant THU suffragette Mary Richardson on one of the greatest nudes THU ever painted, Diego Velázquez's masterpiece 'The Rokeby THU Venus', Mari Griffith examines Richardson's reasons for THU targeting the work, and looks at the way the event was THU reported at the time. THU THU One of the finest works of the Spanish Golden Age and the THU only surviving nude by Velázquez, The Rokeby Venus was THU painted during the Spanish Inquisition, escaped censorship, THU was brought to Britain, and was the first artwork to be THU saved for the nation by the National Art Collections Fund in THU 1906. In what became one of the most famous and symbolic THU acts of 20th century iconoclasm, on March 10th, 1914, the THU painting was badly damaged by Mary Richardson in the THU National Gallery in London. In a statement she said that she THU had "tried to destroy the picture of the most beautiful THU woman in mythological history as a protest against the THU Government for destroying Mrs. Pankhurst, who is the most THU beautiful character in modern history". Emmeline Pankhurst THU was in Holloway Prison at the time and with suffragettes THU including Richardson herself being subjected to THU force-feeding in prison, humiliation, intimidation and THU violence, Richardson said she was attempting to point to the THU hypocrisy of a society which would value an inert object THU over a human life. She gained little sympathy from the THU broader public, and received a mawling from the Press. She THU also varied her statements over time on the subject. Her THU autobiography of 1953 sets out her version of events and her THU reasons for attacking the painting, but it appears that that THU book doesn't tell the whole story. By the time of a BBC THU archive interview recorded in 1961, the year of her death, THU her reasons given include "I hate women being used cheaply THU as nudes. I'd seen men gloating over that picture". She also THU mentions in the interview that the judge sentencing her was THU almost in tears at only being able to give her 6 months in THU jail. THU THU Art historian Mari Griffith has lectured on the Rokeby THU Venus, and to find out more about the story behind Mary THU Richardson's attack on the painting, she talks to Lynda THU Nead, author of 'The Female Nude', on how the 1914 attack THU was interpreted at the time, the outrage caused by it, and THU the way the incident has come to symbolize the perception of THU feminist attitudes towards the female nude. Mari studies the THU restored work in the National Gallery with the curator of THU Italian and Spanish paintings, Letizia Treves, and discusses THU its historical significance and continuing influence. THU Photographer Tom Hunter talks about his reinterpretation of THU the painting in his Hackney-based series 'Living in Hell', THU and the wide-ranging responses the painting still elicits. THU In the press coverage of the incident in 1914 Richardson was THU nicknamed 'Slasher Mary' by the press, and the painting THU likened to a human victim. Venus is hailed as a paragon of THU female beauty: she is young, fertile and passive. Richardson THU embodies the opposite form of femininity - the militant THU suffragist, pathologized, deemed hysterical, a deviant, THU even. A century on, how does history judge her? THU THU 13:45 Publishing Lives b03xgl42 (Listen) THU Series 2, Paul Hamlyn THU THU Robert McCrum explores the stories of five great British THU publishers. THU THU Paul Hamlyn revolutionised the British book trade in the THU 20th century, turning it from a cosy club serving the elite THU into an industrial powerhouse. A Jewish émigré from Berlin, THU he entered publishing by selling books from a barrow at THU Camden Market. But he soon ran low on stock and started his THU own firm, printing books cheaply but handsomely in Eastern THU Europe. His great insight was that beautiful colour plate THU books could be produced for the mass market at very low THU prices. THU THU Hamlyn was an outsider who was looked down on by the THU gentlemen who had traditionally dominated publishing, but he THU achieved his ambition to become the biggest publisher on the THU block. Along the way he transformed the industry with a THU revolution in lifestyle books - cookery, gardening, history, THU art - mass-produced at high quality. THU THU Hamlyn was at the forefront of the non-fiction revolution THU that transformed bookshops and brought colour to post-war THU Britain. Marguerite Patten's Cookery in Colour of 1962 THU quickly became an unprecedented bestseller. Today's THU bestseller lists, packed with celebrity chefs, would have THU been inconceivable before Paul Hamlyn discovered and THU developed this new market. THU THU The play is a shocking reminder of the lengths society will THU go to in the name of justice - a fearful mixture of soul THU crushing isolation and the physical punishment of hard THU labour. THU THU Oscar is on hand to give us some typically Wildean analysis. THU There are more Irish elements, too - republicans offering THU some rousing and organised resistance to the gaol's stark THU regime. After thirteen years she THU returns to the Isle of Wight to meet Elizabeth Hutchings who THU introduced her to the Tennyson Trail. THU THU Elizabeth's late husband, Richard, was the founder of the THU Farringford Tennyson Society, so it was only fitting that he THU should have a bench, placed in his memory, under the poet's THU monument on top of the Down. But when Clare last visited THU this National Trust site, it was their policy not to have THU memorial plaques on benches, a disappointment to Elizabeth. THU But thanks to the likes of Head Ranger Robin Lang, they have THU reversed their position and now the bench has an THU inscription, to Richard, carved into the wood.
