Oscar-winning films can tell us about the American societySAT
of the time.SAT
Paul tells the story of how West Side Story won 10 OscarsSAT
in 1961 and hears from producers, stars and musiciansSAT
involved in the film. It tackles tough issues through theSAT
medium of the musical. With a fresh young cast thatSAT
included Natalie Wood in her first adult role, the movieSAT
sizzles with colour, drama, the outstanding choreographySAT
of Jerome Robbins, the music of Leonard Bernstein and theSAT
lyrics of a young Stephen Sondheim. Behind the scenes,SAT
however, there were arguments, dubbings and overuns, plusSAT
issues over racial casting and 'blacking up'. Yet whatSAT
emerged from a tumultuous production was a trumph.SAT

AgonySAT
Jenni Murray presents a history of personal advice, fromSAT
the mythical, kindly agony aunts of women's magazines toSAT
the public confessional of the radio phone-in.SAT
The advice column began life in the women's magazines. ItSAT
was the role of the kindly, but mythical aunt toSAT
re-enforce the social codes of the day, dispensing jaunty,SAT
practical, nearly always morally serious advice to theirSAT
readers.SAT
Radio brought a new outlet for those doling out advice. ItSAT
started in the buttoned-up 1940s with paternalisticSAT
lectures from Charles Hill, the Radio Doctor (and laterSAT
chairman of BBC) on subjects such as tummy trouble andSAT
melancholia and bloomed into the frank and sometimesSAT
shocking phone-ins.SAT
Today, the 'advice industry' has expanded from radio toSAT
TV, the internet and advice columns in the newspapers,SAT
where readers can offer their own comments. Throughout theSAT
history of agony we have moved from social etiquette toSAT
sexual etiquette in terms of the questions that are beingSAT
asked, and agony aunts have both reflected and influencedSAT
trends.SAT
The increasing candour of the programmes reflects aSAT
parallel shift in British emotional engagement and theSAT
rise of therapy culture, which, some would argue, is notSAT
necessarily something to be celebrated.SAT
The programme tracks these developments, exploring theSAT
phenomenon of the agony aunt and examining how the waySAT
advice is delivered has changed to suit the times.SAT

22:15 Moral Maze b00hkprf (Listen)SAT
Michael Buerk celebrates the 500th edition of theSAT
programme with a debate held at the Royal Society ofSAT
Medicine in London. Melanie Philips, Michael Portillo,SAT
Claire Fox and Clifford Longley cross-examine witnessesSAT
Tom Butler, Bishop of Southwark, Professor AlistairSAT
McGrath, Head of the Centre for Theology, Religion andSAT
Culture at King's College and author of The DawkinsSAT
Delusion, Peter Cave, chair of the British HumanistSAT
Philosophers group and author of Humanism: a Beginner'sSAT
Guide, and Liberal Democrat MP Dr Evan Harris.SAT
Michael and the panel consider the question. if you do notSAT
believe in a set of divinely inspired moral rules, how doSAT
you decide right from wrong in a world with complex andSAT
competing interests? We live in an age where there is noSAT
longer general agreement on religion and the time when ourSAT
society was united by a common set of values based on aSAT
belief in God is long gone. Is it hopelessly optimistic toSAT
believe that Man can create an ethical framework based onSAT
a belief in individual responsibility and mutual respect,SAT
or are those secular values a much a better guide than anySAT
sectarian dogma or religious text? Can a post-religiousSAT
society be a moral society, and if so, whose morals willSAT
we live by?SAT

AgonyMON
Jenni Murray presents a history of personal advice, fromMON
the mythical, kindly agony aunts of women's magazines toMON
the public confessional of the radio phone-in.MON
The advice column began life in the women's magazines. ItMON
was the role of the kindly, but mythical aunt toMON
re-enforce the social codes of the day, dispensing jaunty,MON
practical, nearly always morally serious advice to theirMON
readers.MON
Radio brought a new outlet for those doling out advice. ItMON
started in the buttoned-up 1940s with paternalisticMON
lectures from Charles Hill, the Radio Doctor (and laterMON
chairman of BBC) on subjects such as tummy trouble andMON
melancholia and bloomed into the frank and sometimesMON
shocking phone-ins.MON
Today, the 'advice industry' has expanded from radio toMON
TV, the internet and advice columns in the newspapers,MON
where readers can offer their own comments. Throughout theMON
history of agony we have moved from social etiquette toMON
sexual etiquette in terms of the questions that are beingMON
asked, and agony aunts have both reflected and influencedMON
trends.MON
The increasing candour of the programmes reflects aMON
parallel shift in British emotional engagement and theMON
rise of therapy culture, which, some would argue, is notMON
necessarily something to be celebrated.MON
The programme tracks these developments, exploring theMON
phenomenon of the agony aunt and examining how the wayMON
advice is delivered has changed to suit the times.MON
