SAT SAT 10:30 Prisoner Soul b01rtzdx (Listen) SAT In the 1960s and early 1970s, a number of U.S. prisons SAT allowed inmates to form bands and produce commercially SAT available LPs. Today, many of those records are collectors' SAT items. SAT SAT Gary Younge tracks down some of the men who were in these SAT groups, finding out how the music shaped their lives and SAT hearing from those who supported this progressive initiative SAT in the face of the old punitive regime. SAT SAT Gary travels to Huntsville, Texas, where a bespoke studio SAT was built within the prison. Visiting the maximum security SAT Wynne Unit, Gary is joined by the scheme's former music SAT director, Harley Rex. This is the first time Harley has SAT returned to the unit in over thirty years and he details the SAT scale and impact of the project. SAT SAT 12:00 Money Box b01rv0lh (Listen) SAT Card charges, Thatcher's finance legacy, bank customers SAT unable to run their account SAT SAT From this week excessive charges for using a credit or debit SAT card will be outlawed. 'Excessive' meaning more than the SAT actual cost to the vendor of accepting that payment method. SAT That cost, subject to some argument this week, is probably SAT 20p-50p for a debit card and around 2% or 2.5% for a credit SAT card. Money Box finds examples of firms overcharging this SAT week and one says they will stop it. And if you find a firm SAT not obeying this new law what can you do? Executive director SAT of Which? SAT SAT 14:30 Saturday Drama b01rv0lm (Listen) SAT Great Escape: The Justice SAT SAT Seventy years ago this month, a group of Air Force officers SAT began work on an ambitious plan to tunnel their way out of a SAT German POW camp called Stalag Luft Three. A year later the SAT tunnel was ready and seventy-six made their escape. All but SAT three were recaptured, but fifty were then systematically SAT executed on orders from German High Command. This much was SAT made internationally famous by Hollywood in the film The SAT Great Escape, which mixes a meticulous depiction of the SAT tunnelling plan with highly fictionalised American SAT characters on motorbikes. SAT SAT But there is a stranger part of the story which starts where SAT the film leaves off, and reveals the real history behind the SAT nation-building legend. The British Government vowed to SAT avenge the murders, and within weeks of the war's end, sent SAT RAF investigators into the ruins of Germany, with orders to SAT track down the killers, and bring them to exemplary justice. SAT SAT Award-winning dramatist Robin Brooks and internationally SAT best-selling novelist Robert Radcliffe tell the SAT extraordinary story of the escape, the murders, and the SAT postwar manhunt in the chaos of divided Germany, through the SAT eyes of one of the senior investigating officers: a SAT straightforward by-the-book detective from Blackpool CID. SAT SAT Laura Barton has always been drawn to what Greco represents SAT - that voice, her black-clad kohl-eyed image - and presents SAT a sequence of sketches, impressions, portraits of the SAT octogenarian singer. SAT SAT 19:00 Profile b01rv0lw (Listen) SAT Elizabeth Llewellyn SAT SAT Mary Ann Seighart profiles Elizabeth Llewellyn, the daughter SAT of Jamaican immigrants, who had an obvious talent for SAT singing from an early age. Her school-teachers in south SAT London encouraged her to take lessons and go to concerts, SAT and she won a place at the Royal Northern College of Music. SAT But ill-health forced her to drop out. She then pursued an SAT alternative career in IT recruitment, her talent lying SAT dormant. But when, years later, she joined an amateur choir, SAT her new colleagues urged her to take her voice more SAT seriously. She auditioned for the Glyndebourne chorus and SAT from that point on her rise has been meteoric. SAT SAT Producer: Fiona Couper SAT SAT 20:00 Archive on 4 b01rv0m0 (Listen) SAT Radiolab SAT SAT Radiolab, an American public radio programme, has been on SAT the air for over ten years. Its co-creators, Jad Abumrad and SAT Robert Krulwich (who are also the presenters), say it's SAT somewhere inbetween science and the humanities. It certainly SAT breaks down the conventions of science and, for that matter, SAT most broadcast journalism. Made by WNYC, New York Public SAT Radio, it has fans around the world - two million people SAT download their podcasts each month. The show itself has won SAT a prestigious Peabody award. SAT SAT Neither Jad nor Robert have a scientific background and they SAT aren't afraid to demonstrate how they try to understand a SAT scientific study or theory and sometimes can't get a handle SAT on it. They engage in what appears to be effortless banter, SAT deftly handling topics that might seem intimidating at first SAT sight. SAT SAT Scientists taking part include Oliver Sacks and Richard SAT Dawkins. They don't come over as authority figures and often SAT reveal their personal stories. British neuropsychologist SAT Paul Broks, who is a regular contributor, says "I like the SAT idea that they leave things hanging. Popular science SAT programmes usually wrap things up too tightly, but science SAT isn't like that". SAT SAT Although they are a generation apart, Robert and Jad appear SAT to be equals. They take on subjects like sperm, colour, the SAT nature of numbers, stress, the afterlife, symmetry, the SAT evolution of altruism and race. SAT SAT While respecting the science, they're not afraid to have fun SAT and complain that 'there's not enough joy in public radio'. SAT So their hour-long shows recreate experiments, employ radio SAT drama, singing and occasionally, audience participation. SAT SAT 21:00 Classic Serial b01rqhvz (Listen) SAT A Larkin Double, A Girl in Winter SAT SAT Episode 2 (of 2): A Girl in Winter SAT SAT Philip Larkin's second and final novel which he wrote in SAT 1946, aged 24, and dramatised for the first time on BBC SAT Radio 4 by Richard Stevens. SAT SAT In wintery wartime Britain, Katherine Lind, exiled and SAT alone, endures her job as an assistant in an obscure SAT provincial library with an unpleasant boss and unfriendly SAT colleagues. Frozen in time and tragedy, her past is gone - SAT and with it her family, her friends, her old life. She is SAT living moment by moment. But on this cold, bleak Saturday, SAT news from an English family she once knew forces her to SAT relive the idyllic summer she spent with them six years SAT before. Will Katherine's icy heart finally start to melt? SAT SAT A Girl in Winter is a beautiful evocation of the icy SAT claustrophobia that Philip Larkin himself endured, working SAT in a provincial library in his early twenties, when his SAT career as a poet was only just beginning. SAT SAT This new radio adaptation stars Carolyn Genzkow, a young SAT German film and television star, based in Berlin. Meeting SAT British radio actors for the first time and performing in SAT English, Carolyn brings wonderful authenticity to the role SAT of the isolated émigré Katherine Lind. SAT SAT 22:15 Bringing Up Britain b01rr55c (Listen) SAT Series 6, Character SAT SAT Character can be broadly defined as the collection of SAT strengths and weaknesses that form and define who we are. SAT But to get an idea of what constitutes "good" character we SAT have to go back to the ancient Greek philosophers like SAT Aristotle, who said that the potential for good character is SAT by nature in humans but whether virtues come to be present SAT or not is not determined by human nature but as a SAT consequence of following the right habits. SAT SAT Fast forward a couple of millennia and the role of character SAT is again a hot topic. As a generation of children emerge SAT into an adult world of fierce competition, shrinking job SAT markets and over-subscribed and costly higher education, SAT questions are being asked about how prepared they are for SAT this strange new world. And with anxiety at epidemic levels SAT and a huge rise in cases of depression in teenagers; could SAT focus on character and character education be as important SAT as grades in equipping children for an uncertain future. SAT SAT Joining Mariella Frostrup to discuss this are Baroness SAT Claire Tyler, Lib Dem peer from the Social Mobility All SAT Party Parliamentary Group; Tom Harrison, the Deputy Director SAT of the Jubilee Centre for Character and Values at the SAT University of Birmingham; Tim Gill, a writer and consultant SAT on childhood issues; Sue Atkins, a parenting expert, writer SAT and coach , and Dr Anthony Seldon, Master of Wellington SAT College. SAT SAT 23:30 Broken Paradise b01rqhw3 (Listen) SAT To mark the fourth anniversary of the ending of Sri Lanka's SAT civil war, in May 2009, translator Lakshmi Holmström SAT introduces some of the most powerful Tamil poetry to emerge SAT from the 26 year long conflict, in which an estimated 70,000 SAT people were killed as militant Tamil Tigers fought to SAT establish a separate Tamil state in the north of the island. SAT SAT These poems bear witness to the atrocities committed by both SAT sides and reflect on some of the war's most significant SAT turning points, from the deadly introduction of female SAT suicide bombers to the final bloody showdown on a beach near SAT Jaffna, where government forces conclusively defeated the SAT Tamil Tigers. SAT SAT Poets featured include Cheran, probably the most significant SAT living Tamil poet, whose poems chart the history of the war SAT and of a landscape once idyllic, now devastated. There is SAT also a poem by S. Sivaramani, a promising young woman poet SAT who committed suicide in 1991. In Oppressed by Nights of War SAT she describes the impact of the violence and fear on SAT children. A SUN thread is something we can follow, lose and pick up again. SUN We might find ourselves hanging by a thread, or tying some SUN loose ones together. They can bind us and we can break them. SUN They are woven into our lives literally, metaphorically and SUN linguistically. SUN SUN The idea of following a thread to guide us is age-old, found SUN for example in the Greek myth of Ariadne's thread leading SUN Theseus out of the labyrinth, after he'd slain the Minotaur. SUN SUN 13:30 Lenin in Letchworth b01r9r3x (Listen) SUN In 1907 Vladimir Ilyich Lenin attended a congress of exiled SUN communists in London that helped plan the revolutionary SUN overthrow of the Russian tsar a decade later. It was during SUN this momentous event that the Soviet Union's future leader SUN is said to have visited the English garden city of SUN Letchworth. As MON the 60s turned to the 70s and 80s, these stories were still MON told in terraces in Butetown (the ideal workers house MON village built for the dockers by the Lord Bute, and MON cassettes of the storytellers in Cardiff and back home would MON travel between the two places on the ships. MON MON The first production in National Theatre Wales' third MON season, De Gabay [The Poem], will be a two-day, MON site-specific exploration of the Butetown area of Cardiff, MON with a focus on the lives of its young Somali poets and the MON generations that came before them. The cast and crew will MON include members of the local community, and the audience MON will move between docks, lock gates, the pubs and pilot MON houses of the shoreline and the houses of individual MON families to hear the stories of the two communities MON together. MON MON It's a performance idea based on the Passion in Port Talbot, MON which was the great success of NTW's first season. It has MON been written by 5 young Somali poets alongside John McGrath, MON the artistic director of the NTW. It is an attempt not just MON to tell a remarkable history, but also to unite two ancient MON poetic traditions - the Celtic Eisteddfod which still MON dominates the lives of children in Wales, and the oral MON history poetry of the Somali people who have made Cardiff MON their home. MON MON In this programme poet (and transatlantic sailor) Gwyneth MON Lewis visits Butetown as the performance comes through the MON community. She talks to members of the community both young MON and old and listens to their stories and their poetry. She MON asks about their traditions of theatre, and how the MON community has kept its cultural independence within Wales MON for 100 years. She goes inside the houses of those who will MON be visited by the audiences promenading through their lives, MON and talks too to the actors (some professional, others just MON volunteers who couldn't turn down the temptation) about how MON it feels to tell these stories. And she talks to John MON McGrath and the poet/writers of the play, young men who came MON to Cardiff in the 80s and 90s who add yet another layer to a MON remarkable story of mix and migration. MON MON The backdrop of the theatre weekend itself, with its street MON parades and public performance, will sit alongside the very MON personal stories of the community today. Is the TUE News a public service, a cycle, an entertainment built on TUE sensation, a constant rush of 'breaking' news or a form of TUE national communion and shared belonging? Driven by changes TUE in technology and in news culture itself, and as the news TUE cycle becomes ever faster, the question of what News is also TUE concerns how we consume it and who 'we' are becoming as a TUE result. TUE TUE The series talks to reporters, journalists, editors, news TUE producers and experts including Jon Snow, Alistair Campbell, TUE Adam Boulton, editors Sarah Sands and Ceri Thomas, Paul TUE Staines (aka Guido Fawkes), Ed Stourton and psychotherapist TUE Adam Phillips. TUE TUE Episode 3 (of 3): Brave New Worlds TUE Steve Richards looks beyond the official news cycle to TUE explore what news might become as informal outlets continue TUE to multiply, digitally and online, and as revolutions in TUE technology underwrite the very content of news: the rise of TUE the citizen journalist, the phenomenon of pre-emptive news TUE and the relatively new psychic disorder of news 'addiction'. TUE TUE 11:00 A Natural History of Me! b01rvpkb (Listen) TUE If you thought the human body was only made of human cells, TUE then think again. What scientists now know is that for every TUE one human cell in a healthy body there are about ten times TUE as many microbial cells, mainly bacteria. There's likely to TUE be several thousand different microbes associated with the TUE human body. This collection of bacterial populations is TUE known as the human microbiome. TUE TUE In this programme, Paul Evans discovers just what these vast TUE numbers of bacteria and other microscopic organisms are TUE doing inside us, how important they are to our very TUE existence and how they affect our perception of self. TUE TUE "When my human body runs for the bus" says Paul "Ten times TUE as many non-human cells hop on too. When I go to sleep, 10 TUE times as many other cells get on with minding my business". TUE TUE Changes in these communities may be responsible for gum TUE disease, skins diseases, digestive disorders and even TUE obesity and cancer. TUE But what does all this actually mean and what are the TUE implications for this new found knowledge for what we TUE thought we knew about ourselves . our human self? After all, TUE if we're not all human, then what are we? TUE TUE With the help of scientists as well as philosophers TUE including Satish Kumar and writer and performer A.L.Kennedy, TUE Paul goes in search of some answers to help understand the TUE human ecology, explore ideas about communities and self, and TUE answer the question, "what am I"? TUE TUE As many young Indonesians have more cash in their pockets, TUE music promoters are seeing the country as a new opportunity TUE for high profile pop tours. Artists such as Beyoncé and TUE Rihanna have been booked to play in Jakarta, albeit modestly TUE dressed. TUE TUE But there have been frictions. The world took notice when TUE Lady Gaga's recent show in Jakarta was cancelled - local TUE authorities sat on the fence as conservative Islamic groups TUE called her the "devil's messenger." It seemed that despite TUE Jakarta's reputation as the "city of sin" (an unlikely TUE reputation for the capital city of the most populous muslim TUE country in the world) things were changing. TUE TUE Then American death metal band Cannibal Corpse, banned from TUE performing in some countries because of their graphic songs TUE about mutilation and necrophilia, was approved to play in TUE Jakarta. This is one of the contradictions in Indonesian pop TUE - discovering that heavy metal is on the rise amongst young TUE radical muslims. FRI FRI Henry David Thoreau is one of history's great listeners. His FRI classic work Walden is dense with descriptions of the FRI natural sounds he discovered when he swapped his Concord FRI home for a simple cabin in the woods. But his peace was FRI disturbed by a noise that presaged the age to come: the FRI snort of the iron horse. FRI FRI Professor David Hendy of the University of Sussex explains FRI how the sounds of nature gave way before the industrial din. FRI FRI As cities grew, next-door's noise became increasingly hard FRI to escape. David follows the writer Thomas Carlyle's grumpy FRI attempts at soundproofing, before travelling to New York to FRI imagine the teaming, noisy world of the Lower East Side FRI tenements in the early twentieth century. FRI FRI We also discover the story of medicine's listening FRI revolution - the stethoscope - and find out about the first FRI attempts to use technology to turn ephemeral sounds into FRI something captured permanently.
